Italian restaurants, sub shops, calzone counters and Italian delis sit next to the pizzerias on this site because most of them bake pizza too, often from the same dough. Full-service Italian restaurants take reservations for dinner, add a tip line for table service (15-20% is customary) and usually run a cheaper lunch menu on weekdays. Sub and sandwich shops are counter-order and quick, with sizes by the inch or in half and whole lengths. Calzones and strombolis are priced like a medium pizza and are large enough to share. Italian delis and bakeries sell by weight and by the piece, and many close mid-afternoon.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. Typical hours are 5–10 pm. It is closed on Monday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (510) 848-8748. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, agrodolceberkeley.com.

Its Google rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 677 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.

Berkeley is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Berkeley is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Walked in for dinner for 2 on a Thursday afternoon. There is some street parking around the area, we parked kind of far and just walked over. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and a nice little bar, it’s a cozy restaurant and it got busy. Service was also really friendly. We got the arancini to start, I think it was still a little cold and we also go bread with oil which was really good. I got the lasagna which was really big and I devoured it because I was starting. My friend got the involtini and he finished it as well. The food took some time but overall it’s a nice vibe and a cozy restaurant. They said the lasagna and ravioli porcini trifolati were popular dishes to get.

Really disappointing experience. We ordered four dishes and not a single one was done well. The tomato burrata came with completely flavorless tomatoes. The tuna carpaccio was overly salty, drowning in dressing, with wet, salty tuna and even mayo on topβ€”which felt completely out of place. The pasta ragu had noticeable chunks of pure pork fat, which made it hard to enjoy. The campagnola pasta was swimming in sauce and, instead of pappardelle, had random pieces of spaghetti mixed in. Across the board, the pasta was overcooked, with strands stuck together. When we pointed it out, we were told this is β€œexpected over time,” even though it arrived like that, and that the mixed pasta shapes were just an accident due to batch cooking. Service was practically nonexistent. No one checked in to ask how anything tasted. Our half-eaten burrata and tuna were taken away without a single question. We interacted with at least four different people bringing plates, and even the wine was served by a busser, which made the whole experience feel disjointed and inattentive. Overall, poor execution, questionable explanations, and not worth the price.

The food was variable...some dishes were very good, others were pretty mediocre. The service was some of the worst I have experienced at a restaurant of this level for quite a long time. Things started out fine. We ordered a second bottle of wine that took 15 minutes to arrive, by which time some of us were nearly finished with our main course. I could see our bottle was sitting on the server's table where our server stood, joking with the other staff, for a good 5-10 minutes before I stood up, walked over, and requested that she bring the bottle to our table. At dessert, we were handed two dessert menus for a table of six. When we asked for a menu per person, we got quite the strange/annoyed look from the busboy. A good 15 minutes had passed after we finished the desserts and no server came by to deliver the bill. Not wanting to hang around longer, I went to the bar to request the bill. It took them another 10 minutes to furnish the bill (the restaurant was not busy by then), upon which they added a mandatory 20% tip on the POST-TAX total, which I disputed but they refused to change. We will not be returning, and given the long list of better and more professional options

My friends, new to Berkeley, were telling me that they loved Italian food, so I told them that we must try Agrodolce Trattoria on Shattuck. I know that Agrodolce has roots going back to Caffe Sport in North Beach which I would go to in the 70's, and more recently Trattoria Siciliana on College which was my buddy David's favorite restaurant. We loved it! The atmosphere was great, including projecting the classic film La Dolce Vita on the wall. The food was fantastic, my Swordfish was cooked, as the menu said" perfectly! The cocktail bar was right out of an old movie. And the bread and dipping sauce was a signature classic. My friends and I were able to catch up on recent trips to India, Normandy France and Budapest. It could hardly have been a better choice. Needless to say we'll be back!
